Dental crowns (or caps as they are sometimes known) can be used to replace the top part of a tooth which has become damaged or weakened, provided the root is still relatively strong and healthy.
A crown fits over the existing tooth, helping to strengthen it and make it look like a whole, natural tooth. It also protects the remaining tooth from further decay or damage.
The common materials that are used to make crowns are metals and porcelain fused to metal. If you were looking to have a more superior material for your crown, precious gold crowns can also be made which are very long lasting and conservative of tooth structure.
To retain the most cosmetic smile, all ceramic materials can be used to give a natural tooth coloured appearance and the perfect fit with the most current bonding techniques. The skilled craftsmen in the laboratory can create a ceramic crown or even something called an “onlay” which is similar to a crown but preserves more of the tooth structure. Both of these can then be “bonded” or cemented to your remaining tooth structure by your dentist.
If you have an old crown which you are not entirely happy with, it may well be worth speaking to us about it – you’d be surprised at just what a difference a new one could make!
